Road Trip

It has been another adventurous couple of days at our house again--I know imagine that!! We started off with Hunter's 6 month eye exam (see previous post) and then a trip to back to see Dr. Massey for a recheck and ended up at our home away from home...Kosair Children's Hospital! I am telling you, we are going to own a room by the time Hayley gets older--we are admitted in the hospital for something at least once a year!!! Brian and I counted and this was her 8 surgery and she is only 6!! I am thinking I should of went to med school, could of saved us lots of money.

Sunday night, Hayley had a little bug bite on her side, I was watching it VERY closely since (you know how OCD I am ) it was a little red, well come Monday night it was getting worse and we added a 102 temp---no sleep, cranky, fussy and irritable (I was reliving having a new born)  we ended up at the Pediatricians office Tuesday am.  Our regular Ped. was off, so we saw  Dr. McKenna--he tried to lance/scrape it, but Hayley was having no part of this--she was screaming, crying, kicking etc--Dr. McKenna did get a little "juice" on a stick and was going to send off to the lab. We were prescribe Bactrim and to follow up in 2 days if no better.

this was her "bite" on Tuesday

The spot was no better and actually starting to spread, Thursday, we headed back to Dr. Massey's for a re-check and as soon as she saw Hayley she let us know we were going to take a little "road trip" down town. I had a feeling this is where we were going to end up--with Hayley its either nothing or everything!!  So we jumped in the car and went to Kosair's (we were just there on Tuesday for CT scan--just to show you how frequent we visit there)

My Brown Eye Girl waiting for Dr. Massey to come in-
she was begging me not to let her touch her side!

One good thing is that we have been through this all before and Dr. M has the "hook-up" so we get special treatment--EXPRESS ADMIT!! For those of you with healthy children this is like winning the lottery for us with sickly kiddos--no waiting in the admit areas--we get our own little special secluded "holding area" with our own rooms, nurses, doctors etc!!

As soon as we walked it we were taken to our "holding room" until our room upstairs was ready--all the Doctors, Medical Students, Residents, Surgeons, Nurse etc.  came in and did their thing and we even got our IV put in, marked her margins and called for a room--I tell you they waste no time and the fact they fear  Dr. Massey and her good ripping she gave them  last time!

Hayley was so excited  that she was getting to wear the cute jammies--

and she had total  control of the remote

we finally got her IV in, it took 4 tries and 2 arms-
she was such a trooper!!

We finally got a room and settled in for our stay and in  no time she had all the nurses wrapped around her finger....
bringing her Popsicles and juice

Since we were on "lock down" with limited visitors due to the possibly of germs, the phone never stopped ringing with people calling to check on her--it was Grand Central Station! I tell you what she is one loved and cared about little girl!

Ms. Thang loved answering the phone

IV antibiotic (Clendamycin) was given every 6 hours and it was really starting to work--the redness at the site and puffiness were starting to decrease!

I got in some cuddle time too!

The surgeons came in at 3 AM Friday (Yes, I was NOT happy about that) and said we were going to surgery in the morning to scape, drain, biopsy and pack the area. Total time of the surgery was about 15-20 minutes--she did wonderfully as usual. Report was that  lots of infection (puss) was removed and it was about 6 inches deep and very close (1/2 to 1")  to her stomach muscle! They packed the area with some medicine on what looked like shoestring (again 6" deep) and would remove this on Saturday morning.
The purple mark is showing where the infection had spread, it was a hot, red, raised area that was all over her stomach, belly button, back and pubic area--she was in a lot of pain!

This is after surgery--you  can tell how big the area was by the raised square in the center (about 4 X 5)-we are so glad that she had  to stay Friday night--I couldn't imagine being at home and  pulling out the packing--she was in so much pain (didn't help that the surgeon wasn't very compassionate) they had to give her some good pain med. Her biopsy did come back as MRSA (STAFF INFECTION)

Her spot is looking so much better, we still have to be very careful that it heals properly (inside out) and stays clean, dry and covered. We will be having follow ups with Dr. Massey in 2 weeks and the Ped Infectious Disease in 3--hopefully not a day sooner!! Right now were are on the "Ft Knox" of medicine (Linezolid  and Omnicef) for a month! We are hoping and praying that this works, there are tons of side effects and we will to get weekly CBC's done to monitor our blood levels--totally worth it if it means no more infection!!

This is her site with all the packing out, and cleaned!
It looks so much better then before!!

She was one tired gal on the way home and caught a much needed nap!
Thank you all for all the cards, calls, balloons and flowers. Hopefully once she is healed and germ free we can set a date for her Graduation party and visitors--we will let you know when that is!
